atlas consists of a collection of second-hand fusuma from various living spaces
in different parts of Japan. They were collected as the buildings went through
either refurbishment or demolition. 10 fusuma with exposed layers and line drawings
along the torn edge are suspended as if floating out of place/structure/context
that they no longer belong to. Seen as a whole, it becomes like a sea with
various flow patterns of surface waves in the layer of fluidity. At the same time
it speaks of our contradicting desire between preserving the old and renewing
the old, obsessions we have for the history whilst destroying it. The viewer is
encouraged to freely walk through between the doors.
ある日、見慣れた襖の破れが目にとまり、そっと指でめくると、何枚もの古い
襖紙が層になっていた。その時初めて、襖の張り替えとは、障子のそれとは
異なり、古くなれば新しい紙で覆い、貼り重ねていくのだと知った。
ここにある襖はすべて、住空間(民家・アパート・団地etc)で使用され、日常生活
の営みに接触していたものであり、またリフォームや建て替え、取り壊しなどの
理由により、今まで属していた場所を無くしたものである。
新しさ、時代に整備された均一さを求め、古いものを取り壊し、異物を取り払い、
覆い隠し、塗り替え、更新する。一方で、存在する年月の長さや歴史を評価し、
閉じ込めたり記録したりしながら、ありとあらゆる方法でそれらを劣化や老朽、
忘却から護り、維持しようとする。
どちらにしても、せかいはとどまることなく流れ、
生起し、朽ちている。
ただそれだけのこと。
ただそれだけの、豊かさ。
